We were commissioned to be a part of a very interesting project to create objects for Dr. Prabhakar Singh of Nimaya healthcare’s private space by the latter and his architect team of Ar. Hussain and Ar. Sagar of studio 4 designs, Surat. The brief involved discussions on Dr. Singh's inclination towards ""wabisabi"", a Japanese art of imperfection and simplicity. The ethos of our studio is to not to mimic styles rather adopt their principles in our design process to make bespoke creations. Hence the task was to channel the ideals of wabisabi into our own principles of design and style in a way that both identities are strong yet simultaneously each bring out the best in the other.
Our approach was to use materials that mature with time and experiment with them to create objects that would age slowly and gracefully. Key understanding of the material and its properties led us to informing the design in a way that would direct the pattern of ageing in a subtle and organic manner. The material palette was wood, stone, brass, rattan and organic fabric. Experimenting with these in their raw forms helped to redefine the way we would normally apply them in furniture design. The objects were intended to create a visual and a tactile interaction that evolved over time. Functional volumes that embody the essence of the materials weave artistic vision and utilitarian necessities.
