Every space is born out of its context; the current social situation and the ones that have transgressed, human interactions and vice versa. We do not believe in creating “mood boards”; our design principles come from a deeper understanding of the project.
All our projects are in close conversation and association with the clients. After understanding their thoughts, their beliefs, we help them organize and realize them better.
Our focus is to implement materiality as a process in achieving the atmosphere and space we envisioned. By creating a limited palette, we experiment with how these materials can be utilized in different ways.
Every single object in the space has a meaning, from a door knob to a sculpture. Design, as we see it, is not a “curation” of different objects in the space but an act of creating objects and spaces that are in a meaningful conversation with each other and the user.
We choose materials that age gracefully such as brass, wood, stone, concrete, IPS etc. They do not impose nor do they subdue. We work with a base material and add layers of complexity with complementary materials in a subtle specificity. The iterations of details that emerge become potent.
If you try to understand the truth of a material, it becomes timeless. Our goal is to not stop working with a material unless we have explored it to its full potential.
Responsible sourcing forms an essential part of our design process. All the wood used in our projects is reclaimed. Our general inclination is towards using materials that are procured locally and ones that are closer to their natural state.
Imperfections are accepted and amplified in our forms and volumes. It is our conscious attempt to steer away from merely visually appealing/ “synthetic” spaces. Our focus instead lies in creating spaces that are ‘timeless’, ones that evolve with the user and the social context.
"Her arrogance has no vanity,
She fills your days with drama,
Nights taste of melancholy.
She leave brutal scars,
Woven in her delicate memories.”
Our forms are shaped by our roots: once the essence of an entity is realized, it can be deconstructed and interpreted in numerous ways while still adhering to purest form. Details are given utmost importance; they form the subtle elements that define the output. Time and effort elapse in these nuances; adding details, resolving them etc. But we believe that a design matures and refines itself only through patience and perseverance.
We don't necessarily conform to the ideas and norms of the current scenario of design that is being practiced globally, however, we draw influences from the simplest things such as childhood experiences, chance interactions and other miscellaneous occurrences that are so intrinsic to our Indian culture. Those who work with us are from different parts of the country and bring their own shore of stories, backgrounds and culture which contribute for a wider perspective of design.
Collaborations form an important access of our process. We limit buying material commercially, rather we include various artists to contribute to the project. It is important to provide a platform from the very onset of the process so as to establish a strong design dialogue. For example, textile designers give their input when we first start drafting ideas so that the colour, techniques and details can be incorporated into the design process. In a similar way we involve artists and give them the space to express their art within the parameters we have set for the project. We do this to ensure a coherent and balanced vision in our final outputs as opposed to a haphazard approach to slap things together. Our projects are always in a constant state of evolution. We stress on being fluid; to create a collection of forms, shapes and experiences that shape the space and get shaped by it; with different elements coming together to create a distinct narrative. We work closely with our artisans at different stages of the projects resolving and refining the details. Design is a way of life and this is why we look to various aspects for inspiration. Music, literature, art and cinema serve as our muse and become a seamless part of our process.
Our intent lies not in creating to impress or impose but rather to engage and exemplify daily experiences. Experiences from just being inside the space; to feel the intangible from the tangible.
