We were approached by RS.De for a few detailed furniture pieces for their project in Bombay.
The chair was to be designed in a way that it was compact and yet the client could sit with crossed legs on it. The chair is in solid wood along with a table that complements the chair design.
The brief was to customize our double time swing in a way that it could also be used as a Diwan when needed. We created a mechanism in which the legs could be folded-in when the swing is used as a “swing” and they could be folded-out when it is to be used as a diwan.
The brief for the console was that it was to be used as a service counter and a dining for two when needed. Legs for supports were to be avoided hence, we designed a collapsible mechanism for the table. The unit has storage which could be used when the table is opened. The complex brass support system was a challenge, we did a lot of experimentation for the same and all these parts were fabricated in the workshop. We wanted to emphasise the mechanism when the unit was open and keep the rest of the unit simple.
The architects RS.De opted for a black polish which enhanced the brass elements.
We had not done a low Japanese style dining before and the brief was to have a fabric sandwich glass for the top with a lazy susan. The chair was to be designed in a way that you could fold your legs and sit on it. We wanted to create a piece that would avoid legs and be cantilevered from the central base. A simple but a functional visual. This was emulated the chairs are reminiscent of corbusian parasols supported on a brass cylinder.
